Accessible Textbooks

Gloria,

My name is Dana, and I'm a staff member at the State Library of Kansas-Talking Books office. We provide audio books to the visually & physically impaired. While we do not provide textbooks, I have a few ideas for you. Unfortunately, our director is out of the office today and she would be the best one to answer your question. She will be back tomorrow if you'd like to know more.

The National Center on Accessible Instructional Materials has a great webpage detailing what accessible materials are, what is required on a Federal level, as well as information about what's available on the State level.

The Association of American Publishers provides a publisher look-up service that helps Disability Support Services professionals contact the right publisher so they can obtain electronic files of textbooks.

If you have any more questions about providing textbooks for visually and physically impaired students, please let us know!

Answer

Thanks very much for your help Dana. I will send these links on to our professor who needs to make some decisions with regards to how to serve her disabled students this semester. I will also add your links to our LibGuides for future use by other faculty who might have similar questions.

Best regards,

Gloria Creed-Dikeogu, Ottawa University
