I am doing a research paper and I am having a issue with the correct citation for a article.

I am using the Myers Online Database. I am in WorldCat. I found a article that is formatted as downloadable and has a link to view the article online. I went to the link and read the article and want to use it as part of my research. My problem is since I went out of the database I don't know if i need to use a database cite format or a article citation. To use as a database citation I must include the DOI. At the end of the article it gives the DOI But when you click on the DOI it takes me to just a abstract of the article and no way to get to the actual article. I don't know what to do or which to use. PS If i use the URL it takes me to the actual article but the URL is only to be used if no DOI is not available. Please help! Thanks!

Answer

Hi Tracy

Article citations don't change whether you are in our out of the database. If you used OCLC first search, then you have to say at the end of your citation Retrieved from OCLC First Search Database. If you have a DOI then you do not need to add it. DOI's were created so that if you typed in that number you would be able to easily find the article again. I would suggest you read this whole page below. it explains what to do and gives you two options. One is to use a DOI and the other is to use the Database you got it from at the end of your citation. You must make a choice, but I would choose the first one if I retrieved it from a database.

Please see this APA link  and go to the Electronic

Hope this helps with your dilemma
