Research for the OU History Book

Answer

·       1901 OU Campus Newspaper layout looked very much like the layout in the 1880’s and cost 10c per week but by the 1920’s its price was $1.75 per year

·       1901 OU Campus Newspaper has 20 pages long compared to the Newspaper of the 20’s and 30’s which was 4 pages long

·       Newspaper sported pages full of local ads used to support publication

·       1920’s the OU Campus’s editorial office was located in University Hall

·       In 1901 the newspaper staff was made up of one editor per section and by the 1930’s  the editorial staff was modernized because sections were modernized

·       In the 1930’s there were two to three editors working on each section; back in 1901 the sections in the newspaper included a literary, poetry and fiction, college and personal, city and conservatory, intercollegiate and society section; instead the newspaper’s layout was modernized in the 1930’s to encompass the following sections: features, clubs, society, music and sports and there a lot less ads being sold and more space was being used for actual news reports about the students, faculty and campus as opposed to 1901 when the focus was literary

·       The OU Campus also had three staff reporters on its staff during the 30’s

·       By the 1930’s the paper was being published every other Thursday of the school year

·       By 1947 the OU Campus was a member of the Associated Collegiate Press

·       In the 1950’s the OU Campus Publications Office moved to the OU Commons

·       There the student organization reflected changes in the OU community so that now the newspaper staffing was changed and there were only editors for the Sports and Society Sections of the newspaper;  a Religious section was added so an editor was included for that section; there were now as many as seven or eight staff reporters creating stories for the paper

·       In 1953 the editor wrote an article called “College reflected in Newspaper” and pointed out that whatever was published by the students, reflected on the university community; there were concerns about harsh, insipid criticism by reporters of OU student performance and recitals and the importance of honesty in news journalism; the editor also stated that while it was believed that gossip and social events were important to the newspaper; he was on a crusade against publishing “gossip”

·       By 1965 the OU Campus was operating in the Union; it had changed its student staffing structure to include a Circulation Manager, Cartoonist, Salesman and a Photographer

·       By 1977, the staffing at the newspaper had changed to look more like it looks today; the team consisted of with a managing editor having two assistant editors and staff editors being focused on the areas of advertising, business, artwork and photography; the newspaper also had two faculty advisors on board and a staff of ten OU staff members who worked on behind the scenes newspaper projects

·       The OU Campus of the 80’s and 90’s  look more electronic and included similar layouts such as editorials, crossword puzzles, a music critics corner, a letters to the editor section, cartoons related to happenings or situations on Campus and even at times a poet’s corner featuring student poetry; newspapers in the 90’s turning back to 4 page papers circulating twice monthly

·       The OU Campus Newspaper is now available online through College Media Network at OUCampus.org alongside hundreds of other university and college newspapers from all over the country

·       According to the Aug 26, 2009 OU Campus Newspaper, Amanda Rosenberry, editor-in-chief then said that staff aimed to make it a more student driven newspaper where both web and print editions would exist; and more media focused so that it included slideshows, blogs and podcasts with weekly updates

·       The current OU Campus website today includes university news offerings as well as applications like: Tweets, Accuweather, Most popular links and RSS feeds that readers can setup for their own use
